Urban Sanitation Interventions

Background : Sanitation is a big issue in the country and more than 60 % of rural population do not have modern sanitation facility. There are schemes such as Total Sanitation Campaign , Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan etc in the country. Some agencies are working on the issue to make the villages open defecation free . In this stream PRIA has attempted to in Chhattishgarh through CLTS (Community Led Toilet Service) . Chetana has been selected as one of the partner NGOs for Dharsiwa district for this project.

Objective : To stimulate community demand & participation at large scale through Mass training of Swachhta Doots and local volunteers

Project area : 40 villages of Dharsiwa block of Raipur district.

Activities : The activities are mostly towards sensitization of the communities, undertaking community meetings and training to the swachata-doots. Also the communities are facilitated for making sanitation plans of the village.

Results : The organization was successful in undertaking all the sensitization and training activities in the project area.

Challenges : The only challenge in this project is the behavioral change of people as they are used to defecate openly in fields and this has been continuing since generations. Changing their minds are very difficult to undertake.
