PPTCT

The Prevention of Parent to Child Transmission of HIV/AIDS (PPTCT) programme was launched in the country in the year 2002 following a feasibility study in 11 major hospitals in the five high HIV prevalence states. Currently, there are more than 15000 Integrated Counselling and Testing Centres (ICTCs) in the country, most of these in government hospitals, which offer PPTCT services to pregnant women. Of these ICTCs, nearly 550 are located in Obstetrics and Gynaecology Departments and in Maternity Homes where the client load is predominantly comprised of pregnant women.

Objective : The PPTCT ( Prevention of Parent To Child Transmission ) is program aims at protecting the new born from the infection of HIV. This program is as per the Guidlines formulated WHO for preventing the HIV transmission from Parent to Child.

Activities:
Visiting Aganwadis and referring ANC cases for voluntary testing of HIV
Regular visit to the PPTCT centre in Medical college
Follow up of the positive ANC cases as soon as the status of the positivity known ,for 9 months
During the ANC period regular counseling in context of institutional delivery, feeding the child, preparations for the delivery.
Counseling the family members too regularly.
Ensuring regular tests and visits of the beneficiary.
Ensuring that the beneficiary is on ART.
Counseling on the diet.
Follow up of PNC for the tests done

Results : The organization has been successful in follow up of almost all the cases identified and none of the cases followed both ANC and PNC were found positive.

Challenges : A great challenge faced due to the stigma still prevalent in the society about a person being HIV positive. As a result people don’t want their identity of being positive known to the other family members relatives, neighbor which leads to non availability of the person over phone, giving wrong address, secretly migrating etc resulting which the workers find it very difficult to track them and get in touch with them. Hence hampering the availing of services.
