GAATW

Background : Migration is a very big social problem of the state and this is intertwined with women trafficking . The state has many destinations of migration and it is directly related to the literacy rate, decision making power of women and poverty. It needs an all out effort simultaneously. In this direction GAATW project has attempted in the state where the organization is an implementing partner at one of the selected place i.e Bastar.

Objective : To understand the complexities around inter-state labour migration, especially female labour migration, in India, to critique and raise our voices against forced or distress migration and to support young women and girls in making informed and well considered decisions regarding their in-country migration for work.

Project area: This project was focused in Bastar district. The organization`s presence in the district due to TI project of NACO gave an added advantage to the organization.

Activities : Important activities include media tracking, organizing social movements, resource assessment and improving the decision making status of women , imparting training on education value , value addition and career guidance , counseling women on their civil defense, social protection , health consciousness behavior, hygiene and nutrition etc. These activities will mildly help change the mind-set . The behavior and information level is the basic tenet on which the migration and trafficking can be addressed. In this the position of the women needs to be strengthened both mentally and physically.

Results : Though it will be difficult to say on the impact of the project but the pilot attempt has certainly helped in elevating the women status and women have been empowered with knowledge, skill. This project has given a new experience to the organization and set a trend in the communities to check migration and trafficking. The project needs to be replicated in all those areas that are catchment for women trafficking and source of migration.

Challenges : Dealing with women trafficking and migration is always challenging as it involves many vested interests who will try to oppose in many ways. The same phase was equally passed by the organization. Another challenge is to change the mind constitution of women for a stake in decision making. The society is patriarchal since ages and a small attempt hardly can make a big difference.
